According to a 2019 Cyber Readiness Report<\/a> by American insurance company Hiscox, sixty-one percent of firms suffered from cyberattacks in the past year. Thus, most organizations have acknowledged cybercrime as a serious threat by now. Advanced phishing filters, firewalls and specialist tools to increase cybersecurity have therefore become indispensable in many organizations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cybercriminals have therefore shifted their attention to employees: by exploiting the lack of user knowledge of IT systems among employees, cybercriminals are now indirectly using employees as their first access to those same IT systems. In 46 percent of the cyber incidents in organizations, uninformed or na\u00efve employees made a significant contribution to these incidents, according to research<\/a> by global cybersecurity company Kaspersky.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increasing cybersecurity awareness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A part of global cyberattacks could be prevented by ensuring employees follow and apply organizations\u2019 precautionary measures. This can be done by increasing employees\u2019 awareness of possible dangers, making sure they\u2019re well-informed on precautionary measures and by training personnel in cybersecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Google, there\u2019s a constant flow of people using search terms such as \u2018cyber security awareness email templates\u2019, \u2018security awareness email template to employees\u2019 and \u2018cyber security email template\u2019. The intentions these searchers have are great: using templates to increase employees\u2019 cybersecurity awareness<\/a>. Training employees by sending them emails with tips related to cybersecurity, and thereby closing common gaps in user knowledge, which then no longer can be abused by cybercriminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prevention? Not via email<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

However: emails contribute to the information overload<\/a> employees have to deal with on a daily basis. Research by professor Cary Cooper of Manchester University shows this overload of emails causes increased stress levels. And too much stress causes people to make mistakes<\/a>. This quickly creates a vicious circle, that still increases cybercriminals\u2019 chances of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effective training program<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To avoid falling back into this vicious circle, there are a number of things organizations can do to set up an effective training program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
